What electrolytes do in the body

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge in solution, and they govern fluid balance, nerve signaling, and muscle contraction. When you sweat, you lose water and electrolytes together, and replacing only the water can dilute what remains, which is why heavy sweaters sometimes feel worse after drinking plain water.

How to read the label

Turn the package over and read the Supplement Facts panel in milligrams per serving. A sodium-forward endurance product may list several hundred milligrams of sodium, while a light daily blend lists a fraction of that. Neither is wrong, but they are built for different jobs.

Watch the sweeteners and added sugar as well. Some mixes use sugar deliberately, because a modest amount of glucose aids sodium and water absorption during intense exercise, which is the principle behind oral rehydration.
